I went to a cousin's graduation ceremony the other day and it was jarring to hear people talk about the exciting future that lies ahead.

I wish the valedictorians and faculty speakers would tell the truth: Half of those people in their caps and gowns have gone as far as they're ever going to, those people need to take a look around because it's all downhill from here. The rest of the graduates will go a little further. A steady job, a trip to Hawaii or a move to Phoenix. But out of everyone else how many will do something worth while? Write a play, paint a painting that will hang in a gallery, find a cure to a disease? Two of them? Maybe 3. And how many will find true love? My guess would be about the same. And enlightenment? Maybe one of them.

The rest of them will make compromises, find excuses, someone or some thing to blame, and hold that over their hearts like a pendant on a chain.
